How To Wax Your Floor With A Buffer
First, prepare by gathering your supplies. A coarse bristled attachment for the buffer, two pieces of soft cleaning towel, wide enough to cover the bristled attachment (old t-shirts will work very well), a medium-sized can of floor wax (about the size of a cereal bowl), an old metal coathanger, a pair of pliers and a lighter.
- Start with the wire coat hanger which will be used to form a handle for the wax can. Unravel the coat hanger and then wrap it around the can of wax three times. You should have an equal length of wire left on both ends afterwards.
- Next, take the pliers and twist the ends together to secure the wire to the can. Twist the rest of the wire around to make the handle strong too. Now grab the lighter and ignite the wax (note: this should be done only on hard wax, not liquid wax). Once it lights up it will burn softly, not unlike Sterno. Let it burn for 15 seconds. Gently blow it out or place the lid of the can on top to snuff it out.
- Pour the now liquid wax over the floor in a straight line across the room. Repeat this step until the floor is covered with lines of wax two feet apart.
- Using the coarse bristled attachment on the buffer begin slowly spreading the wax over the floor until it is evenly spread across the room. Finally, place one of the soft pieces of cloth between the buffer and floor and slowly begin moving side to side over the floor.
- Take your time. Patience will be rewarded here. Repeat this step. Switch to a clean cloth and repeat. Slowly your floor will begin to glow to a high sheen.
